Though india always remained diverse in its religious practices, shaivism, mahayana buddhism and vaishnavism had developed great mass following in indian society at different times and at different places. Shaktism, ganapatya, saurya, tantrayana buddhism and many smaller sects existed in pockets. later all the above variations got fused somehow and formed mordern hinduism as we know today. jainism was somewhat mainstream but its influence reduced slowly.
